A tooth has three layers: the outer enamel, the middle layer called dentin, and the innermost part of the tooth called pulp that keeps the tooth healthy and alive. When a tooth breaks or a cavity gets too big, it gets close to the nerve of the tooth. If the nerve becomes infected or dies, the tooth will start to become painful.
What Happens during Root Canal Treatment
In a root canal procedure, our dentist first numb your tooth so you won't experience any pain. Next, they carefully clean out the infection and dead pulp and fill the hollowed-out area with a special biocompatible material to prevent the infection from returning.
After the tooth heals, in about two weeks, you will return to Southside Dental Center so our dentists can check that the tooth has healed properly, then place a final crown or filling on the tooth.
