A tooth has three layers: the outer enamel, the middle dentin and the inner nerve or “pulp.” When a tooth breaks or a cavity gets too big, it gets close to the nerve of the tooth. If the nerve becomes infected or dies, the tooth will start to become painful.
In a root canal procedure, the doctor carefully cleans out the infection and dead pulp. The doctor then fills in the area with a special plastic to prevent the infection from returning.
