Tooth Extraction

The goal at Southside Dental Center is to provide our patients with services and education about their oral health that will keep their teeth healthy for many, many years. We never suggest removal of a tooth until we have exhausted all other, more conservative, options.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

However, circumstances do occur where extraction is our only option. There are a number of circumstances where Dr. Abramowski may recommend extracting a tooth:

  • We are treating advanced gum disease and extraction is needed to save the gums and the rest of the teeth.
  • A broken or decayed tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a root canal or similar procedure.
  • A wisdom tooth is positioned in a way that may cause it to start crowding surrounding teeth.
  • A tooth has grown at an odd angle and threatens the position of other healthy teeth.
  • We are preparing for orthodontic treatment and need to remove some teeth for the best results.

We want you to be part of the decision-making process, and we will take the time to answer your questions so you understand why the procedure is necessary.

Many simple extractions can be handled right here at our Monticello dental office. We will always do everything possible to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment. If your needs are more complex, we may refer you to a trusted oral surgeon who is best equipped to ensure a safe, effective procedure.

We Care about Your Concerns

Dr. Abramowski and our team have performed many stress-free and gentle tooth extractions for our patients. Before we begin your tooth extraction procedure, we will ensure that your mouth is completely numb so you will not feel any pain. We also offer nitrous oxide sedation if you need a little extra help relaxing.

It is understandable that you may still be a little intimidated by the idea of the procedure. Our caring team knows how to help apprehensive patients, and we have learned that a big dose of compassionate care from our team goes a long way toward helping you relax.

Post-Procedure Recovery

Extraction is typically performed using local anesthesia, and we will do everything possible to minimize your recovery time. Before you leave our office, we’ll provide you with a list of instructions to follow at home.

Generally, we recommend that in the first day or two after your procedure you avoid eating any foods that require chewing. Stick to soft foods, like yogurt, ice cream, or soup. Avoid drinking through a straw because the sucking action increases your risk for bleeding and other complications.
