Preventative care through regular dental visits and healthy brushing and flossing habits will provide a lifetime of oral health.

Whether you're a parent preparing for your child's first visit, or an adult whose last visit was, well, a few years ago, you'll feel better knowing that quality care is close to home. Here are services offered at Southside Dental:

•  Regular exams and cleaning

•  Extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Teeth are extracted because of extensive decay, a fracture or extra teeth blocking others from coming in.

Wisdom teeth can be also extracted either before or after they come in. They commonly come in during the late teen years or early twenties. Wisdom teeth that are impacted get stuck in the jaw and often need to be removed if they are decayed or cause pain. A wisdom tooth that has emerged partially may be blocked by other teeth or may not have enough room to come in completely. This can irritate the gum and cause pain and swelling.

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. Simple extractions can be done under a local anesthetic. A surgical extraction involves teeth that cannot be seen easily in the mouth, either because they have broken off at the gum line or because they have not come in yet. Most extractions can be done at Southside Dental, but some surgical extractions may be referred to an oral surgeon.

•  Orthodontic care uses corrective appliances, usually braces, to prevent or correct dental or facial irregularities such as crooked teeth, bite irregularities or large gaps. Most orthodontic care can be provided at Southside Dental.

•  Root canal treatment removes the pulp from the center of the tooth. Pulp consists of tissue, nerves and blood vessels essential when a tooth first forms. Once the tooth matures, the pulp can be removed. Removing the pulp is called endodontic treatment or a root canal. It's performed when the pulp becomes infected, most often due to an untreated cavity, or damage from trauma, a fracture or extensive dental work. Once the pulp becomes infected, the infection can affect the bone around the tooth, causing an abscess to form. Root canal treatment can save the tooth by removing the infected or damaged pulp and treating any infection.
